July 10 begins collection of 1 million signatures to stop violence at European borders

A group of human rights activists has submitted a European Citizens Initiative (ECI) to the European Commission calling for the respect and full implementation of Article 4 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment.”

From July 10, the collection of 1 million signatures will begin so that the Commission will provide concrete actions aimed at protecting [human] rights with the establishment of mechanisms to stop abuses and violence at borders, in the common European space, and in countries with which agreements are made to outsource borders.

“The European Union is founded on the indivisible and universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality, and solidarity,” says the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights preamble.
