Embracing Cultural Exchange: A Journey to Nami Island and Gapyeong Rail Bike Park

On September 22, 2024, a group of administrators from Baguio Central University set out on an unforgettable exploration of two of South Korea’s most captivating destinations: Nami Island and the Gapyeong Rail Bike Park. This journey offered a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and a much-needed break from the busy pace of academic life.

Nami Island: A Cultural and Natural Sanctuary

A picturesque pond with water lilies and traditional Korean Architecture.

Nami Island, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, immediately drew us into a world of tranquility. The towering metasequoia trees, verdant gardens, and peaceful walkways provided a serene backdrop to explore Korea’s natural wonders. The island’s collection of Korean artworks and the iconic “Winter Sonata” bridge, made famous by the popular drama, served as a highlight of our visit. We wandered through the island’s art installations and paths, appreciating not just the aesthetic but the cultural narrative woven into the island’s design. Nami Island also serves as an important reminder of the power of nature to inspire peace and reflection.

Madam President Margarita Rillera takes a peaceful moment for a solo photo amidst the serene beauty of the island—a place framed by nature’s calm and grace.

The Naminara Republic include the following Eco Farm Yeonryeonji Pond, Baekpungmilwon Maple Garden, Dodamsambong Garden, Water Garden Swimming Pool, Meta-sequoia Lane, Iseul Recycling Garden, Ginkgo Tree Lane, Jeonggwan Baekryeonji Pond, Yuyeongji Pond, Hut Bridge, Lovers’ Woods, Bungalow Row Riverside Path, Changgyeongwon Garden. In a day, guests cannot be able to go to all these if beautiful sites if we relish each place with consciousness and awe. In their pamphlet, these are the words that were written for guests to reflect on “When spring comes, Nami Island is covered in flowers, in summertime, the river winds blow through the shady woods. In autumn, the fallen leaves carpet the earth, while in winter, the island is transformed into a world of icicles and snow.” This 460,000 square meter island, embroidered with breathtaking gardens and woods, is where the walking paths greet the sunrise and sunset, these are the most beautiful gifts that Nami Island gives to her visitors.

After indulging in a delicious Korean meal, we continued our adventure to the Gapyeong Rail Bike Park. The ride along the old railway line offered a leisurely escape, with stunning views of the Bukhan River and surrounding mountains. Pedaling through tunnels and bridges, we were immersed in South Korea’s rural beauty. The journey wasn’t just an exhilarating ride; it was a way to reconnect with nature, enjoy the fresh air, and reflect on the infrastructure that once connected communities across the country.

Learning Through Cross-Cultural Exchange

Our immersive experiences in Nami Island and Gapyeong showcased the profound value of cross-socio-cultural exchanges, enriching our perspectives as educators and academic leaders. By connecting with Korea’s history, traditions, and values, we gained insights that transcend cultural boundaries—insights we can bring back to our communities to promote intercultural understanding and enhance academic practices. From exploring historical sites to engaging in meaningful dialogue, these encounters serve as a powerful reminder that cultural exchange fosters personal growth, enriches professional development, and bridges diverse worlds.

Reflections and Gratitude

As the day came to a close, we reflected on the significance of this journey. The natural beauty, cultural immersion, and camaraderie made this trip not just a recreational escape but a meaningful learning experience. The opportunity to explore South Korea’s hidden gems, connect with colleagues, and take a step back from the demands of academic life left us feeling grateful and inspired. From the tranquil paths of Nami Island to the scenic rail bike adventure in Gapyeong, this journey was a reminder of the importance of taking time to connect with nature, experience new cultures, and learn from the world around us.

Global Learning, SDG 4-Target 4.7: Education for Sustainable Development

Our journey to Nami Island and Gapyeong Rail Bike Park, along with other sites, provided us with a unique glimpse into the natural and cultural beauty of South Korea, broadening our understanding as representatives of Baguio Central University. This experience not only showcased breathtaking landscapes but also highlighted the profound role of cultural exchange in global education, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, Target 4.7: Education for Sustainable Development.

In embracing the essence of SDG 4, we were reminded that education extends beyond academic walls—it encompasses real-world encounters that promote sustainability, peace, and cultural appreciation. By connecting with South Korea’s history and environment, we return as lifelong learners, inspired to integrate these lessons into our academic leadership and contribute to a more globally connected, compassionate world.
